 Primary Topics covered include

1.       The development of English/American/Canadian common law and constitutions, particularly from the reign of King James I and VI through the late-19th century.

2.       North American Indian treaties, which have been a focus of my work for many years.

3.       The history of First Nations and Métis peoples generally, with emphasis on some particular topics and issues.

4.       Intellectual history of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, particularly the last.

5.       Western Canadian history generally.

As examples, the electronic library and bibliography are particularly strong in these specific areas:

New England of the 17th and 18th centuries. I include a great deal of material about Puritan New England. I also include most of the printed collections of documents relating to New England and New York, such as E.B. O’Callaghan’s Documents Relative to the Colonial History of the State of New-York and the Documentary History of the State of Maine, as well as several early histories of the region.

Western Canada and the northern portion of the western United States in the 19th century, particularly travel literature. For example, I include all of Thwaites’ Early Western Travels and various accounts of early European exploration. I include all the material from the Palliser and Hind scientific expeditions, much of the missionary literature, and much else relating to the time and area.

First Nations and Métis. I include a great deal regarding the history of the peoples, both primary documentation and secondary analysis. I made a particular effort to be thorough in specific areas such as education and residential schools. I include such works as Cadwallader Colden’s classic History of the Five Nations and Henry Schoolcraft’s pioneering Archives of Aboriginal Knowledge.

Legal texts and commentaries from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. These cover a wide range of legal topics, with an emphasis on the English Constitution. I include primary documentation such as the 33 volumes of Howell’s State Trials, some volumes of the English Reports, and Pickering’s Statutes at Large.

Canadian periodicals of the late-19th century. I include all the volumes of the important Canadian Monthly and National Review and many of the volumes of the similar publications of the Canadian Institute, as well as others.

Canadian and American series of society transactions. I include almost all Proceedings and Transactions of the Royal Society of Canada from 1882 to 1922. I also include almost all the annual reports and other publications of the Smithsonian Institution from 1847 to 1910.

Treaty and aboriginal rights issues and litigation. I include much of the case law relevant to these topics in my electronic library. The bibliography cites much of the scholarly commentary about the case law.

General Canadian and American history. I include several 18th- and 19th-century general history texts, such as the works of P.F.X. Charlevoix, Francis Parkman, William Kingsford, and  George Bancroft. I also include printed collections of primary documentation such as the 73 volumes of Jesuit Relations.

Literary, political, and economic works. I include multi volumes of the works of various thinkers and writers such as Karl Marx, John Locke, Edmund Burke, Thomas Jefferson, William Shakespeare, Washington Irving, T.C. Haliburton, etc.
