The course will focus on the significance of childbirth in women's and their birth partner's lives, and the doula's role within the prenatal period, during labour, birth and the postpartum. The students will learn about the emotional and physical processes associated with giving birth, and through hands-on application, will explore various techniques for pain relief in labour. Student will examine methods to enable women and partners to cope with complications in pregnancy and labour. Newborn care and breast-feeding will also be covered, as well as peer support within local as well and DONA International doula organizations. Supplementary literature, videos, and role-play will be used to help students build theoretical and practical skills

Course participants must observe a prenatal class (not as an expectant parent) prior to, or after attending the Labour Support Training Course. Please note that observing a prenatal class is also part of the Certification requirements for DONA International. Therefore two steps towards certification will already have been accomplished
There are no other educational prerequisites to attend the course
It is strongly suggested that student read the following books before the course:
Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn (Simkin, Whalley and Keppler, 2001)
The Doula Book (Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus, 2002)
The Birth Partner: Everything You Need to Know to Help a Woman Through Childbirth, (Simkin, 2001)
